Follow-up Comment #3, bug #40851 (project maposmatic):
As far as I can tell in December 2013 OSM had already switched from the old
Mapnik style to the CartoCSS based one, while maposmatic.org is still using
the Mapnik one.
That would explain the visual differences.
It is even more obvious today as a lot of changes to the CartoOSS style have
never been backported to the older Mapnik one.
