Thanks, Sangjin!  Could you also commit this to branch-2.8? I find it odd that 
the fix is important enough to backport to 2.6 and 2.7 but not important enough 
for 2.8.  Users updating from those older releases to 2.8 will accidentally 
drop this fix.
