Okay, so I opened a ticket in jira to install java on cassini [1]. I think the tasks we're setting up on cassini now may be useful on ptolemy later as well. There still seems to be a problem with mod_tile and renderd: mod_tile is only returning cached tiles like [2] while a direct rendering with mapnik produces better translated images with data from the current import [3]. mod_tile reports those cached tiles as "due to be rendered" [4] but it won't get rendered. Unfortunately the mappers group doesn't have access to /var/log/apache2/error.log anymore (only to /var/log/apache2/error.log.1) so I can't see what's going on with renderd.
