Hello,
yes we have some problems to provide so many styles on Toolserver and
delivering also the tiles for the map inside wikipedia.
The expiring-rules are not very efficient at medium zoom-levels...so
it's difficult to keep the map up-to-date.

To get an up-to-date tile there is a "dirty"-trick:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Slippy_Map#Mapnik_tile_rendering

We have nothing to do with the problems of xapi server fafnir, we have
our own problems. We work on this to speed-up the database
(I/O-performance).
To the "normal" update rate: For the map in Wikipedia I see it not so
critical if we have a delay of a month or so, but if editors use a map
like lit-map or hikebikemap to control there changes we should have an
expire on higher zoom-levels so that we try to be up-to-date.

Greetings Kolossos

BTW:
There is also a lit-map from itoworld.com:
http://www.itoworld.com/product/data/ito_map/main?view=69&lat=46.951081&lon=7.438637&zoom=13
Perhaps this map helps.
