I just tested the 8.0.0-beta2 and it is in fact required: "Web
application error. Required configuration value MS_MAP_PATTERN not set".

Regarding MS_MAP_PATTERN, let's let SteveL respond here, and I will
correct the docs (as throughout this 8.0 process I always assumed it was
now required).
