is to project the buffer in the same projection as the layer. Then the
extent is returned correctly. Something like

$buffer_polygon=$selected_shape->buffer($buffer_width);
$buffer_polygon->project($prj, $prj);
$shapebounds=$buffer_polygon->bounds;
