MS4W is an acronym for 'MapServer for Windows', not a solution for a Unix based web host.Sorry, I guess I did not clearly state my question(s)! I knew MS4W stood for the installation of MapServer on a Windows computer. What I should have asked was once I had a set up under MS4W, which of the files would/can I upload to an Apache web host? Or will I have to completely do a separate set of files for each OS? I am hoping that the map files and other files I create on my home computer using MS4W will be able to uploaded to the web host running Apache. You can try the FGS installer (http://www.maptools.org/fgs/),I will take a look at that set up. but being successful relies on how your hosting company has the server set up.Not sure what you mean by how they have th server set up. Are you saying the paths? Try it and see what happens. It never hurts to call up your hosting company and talk about your requirements. Hosts are a dime a dozen; they often will make a small change for you to keep you happy and keep your business.Hmmm, not sure what the relationship with our hosting company is. I am doing this as part of a larger setup ( http://www.wohva.org ). I am a volunteer and this is a volunteer organization. I do know they are paying for web hosting. Since I am quite knowledgeable in computers, but not so much in hosting services, they asked me to see if I could set up a website listing all the OHV areas and trails (ATVs, 4x4s, and motorcycles) in the state of Washington. Since I have done a lot of websites, I said sure. I currently have a table-based listing. Unfortunately the Land Action Committee Board of Director liaison saw the MN DNR web site and liked the map! So he asked if I could do that similar setup. Of course, I said I would give it a shot, not knowing what all was involved. I feel I could set up such a site using MS4W, but never done anything with an Apache-based set up. Hostgis provides an excellent hosting service (http://www.hostgis.com/).If all else fails, I'll have to look and see what they provide. You can also install Mapserver and its dependencies from source on a commercial web hosting server.Have no idea what that means :-( Judging from your post I would thoroughly try out the first option. Will attempt that first. Appreciate the very helpful response! Paul Member WOHVA LAC Committee |
