I'm aware that it is possible to be more specific with the SQL statements made directly to Oracle Spacial or PostGIS, and I'm wondering if something similar is possible when requesting data through ArcSDE.

This is ArcSDE managing an Oracle database. I want to do something like

SELECT *,TO_CHAR(thenumber) AS thenumstring FROM ...

The idea is to be able to use Oracle functions to manipulate data that is being requested and returned from a getFeatureInfo request.

I believe with PostGIS and Oracle this is done within the DATA parameter to a layer, but the descriptions of an SDE don't suggest this is possible. Looking at the source it isn't clear how to manipulate the SQL statement that is being sent.
