I used the method last year to render points from (and lines) from SQL Server. The biggest problem is that Mapserver/OGR does not implicitly use any spatial index when using a VRT entry of SrcSQL (carefully read http://www.gdal.org/ogr/drv_vrt.html).

Hi,
I need to connect to a MS SQL SERVER table, read the lat/long fields and render a map of points.
I read this wiki
http://trac.osgeo.org/mapserver/wiki/VirtualSpatialData

Is this still the best approach to do that?
Thanks!
Steve
