Okay, well, it was worth a shot... We are moving the location of dynamically-generated SLDs to a publicly-accessible area of our website. They will be remote from the Shapefiles they are used for, but we'll survive.
I thought I should add a final comment to provide (what appears to be) the only resolution in case someone else is trying to find a way around the same thing in future.
