Another one bites the dust....I guess this one isn't possible as asked either.
I did want to let any future readers know what we have done to address this is create a "legend generator" (for lack of a better term) web service that uses a getStyles request for a given layer, parses the SLD and generates image files representing each rule. Then, it builds a JSON object with all the details to build the legend presentation in whatever client calls it (including the paths to the legend icons). The client can decide if it wants to display the text that goes with a given legend icon itself.
