The ANCHORPOINT option looks perfect. For now I went with your other
approach of a full underlying symbol and a half symbol on top.
I'm still not sure why the two half symbols didn't line up.

I'd like to symbolise a point dataset with a square (or circle) using
two colours. This is useful for displaying values collected on both
sides of a road (for example).
