Hi,
ANGLE FOLLOW is subject to MAXOVERLAPANGLE (see
http://mapserver.org/mapfile/label.html). If there is an angle between
letters that is larger than 22.5 (if you don't have a manually-set
value), then the label will not be drawn.

Good idea. But even changing to "BUFFER 0" didn't change anything ...

less labels can fit...
