I've added these examples into a new document named "Virtual File System": http://mapserver.org/input/virtual-file.html

Thanks for the speedy replies, guys. I have it working now. For me the
issue was the product of (1) using a relative path, and (2) using the
wrong TYPE. Silly me!

Thank you Even, my issue was the full path requirement. I will document
    this now.

    Below is my working layer (with MS4W 3.1.4 / MapServer 7.0.1) :

    LAYER
       NAME "testzip"
       TYPE POLYGON
       STATUS ON
       CONNECTIONTYPE OGR
       CONNECTION "/vsizip/D:/ms4w/apps/test/test.zip"
       DATA "test"
       CLASS
         NAME "test"
         STYLE
           COLOR 240 240 240
           OUTLINECOLOR 199 199 199
         END
       END
    END # layer
