Thanks,
I have done that before but I can only do that manually. I need a method
either inside of Mapserver, in VBScript in an ASPX page, in Javascript in
the Template page, or PHP to do this and then pass it to Mapserver to render
the next map.

You can run ogrinfo on it and get the extents

If I have a shapefile as a layer can I query the extents of that
shapefile from MapServer or MapScript?

Thanks for all the help you give to us poor newbies.
