then why do these companies copyright their names. if it's only about a
product, why are names such as Autodesk, Erdas, Arc etc copyrighted so
no one else can use it. this is certainly about brand identity, brand
value. and they will make huge amounts of money by using the name. and
if the other mapserver is not good, the original also suffers greatly -
all goodwill built through such a great effort gone down the drain.
I think it is high time Mapserver is copyrighted/trademark registered
and the rights to use Mapserver and its logo retained within the
community or however that is managed legally.
So as to prevent identity loss in future.

does not matter if it is called arcims, mapxtreme or mapserver. it has
to work.
