I was reading in "Web Mapping Illustrated" that MySQL "lacks many of the
spatial functions found in PostGIS".

Anyone have an idea what features it lacks?

There is a good analysis that Paul Ramsey did a year or two ago that I can't put my hands on, but ask on the PostGIS list and I'm sure they will point you to is. Overall, it is a pretty unbiased (IMO) analysis that was done during a project to assess porting PostGIS to MySQL and points out a lot of problems and deferences in the way things work.

Which MySQL or PostGIS does anyone prefer?

I used MySQL for years and resisted moving to PostGIS because I didn't feel I had time to learn it. I finally made the jump to PostGIS and I am kicking myself for not moving over sooner.

It was not as hard as I had imagined to learn.
It is well integrated with mapserver.
It is very well supported on the PostGIS list - Thanks guys!
You can do amazing things with PostGIS!

I'm just starting to implment a spatial database and wonder which one to
use.

Just use Postgres/PostGIS! I still love MySQL and use it for some things but I am finding that there is not reason to now that I have migrated to PostGIS.

Subject: [UMN_MAPSERVER-USERS] mysql?

Hi all.
I have seen on the home page that MapServer supports MySQL tables via OGR,
which however does not have support for spatial data. Could someone point

out

a resource to understand this better, or give us a brief overview of MySQL
support in UMN MS?
Thanks a lot.
