I find it odd that the layer is being closed if the open never
actually succeeded.  If it did succeed then ... well that would be
interesting.

Is there anyway to get more debug output, short of adding more print statements to the executable?

I am not aware of a way to get more debug information short of adding
extra debug statements yourself.
