When using CONNECTIONTYPE OGR, there are special attributes called OGR:LabelText, OGR:LabelAngle and OGR:LabelSize that can be used as LABELITEM, ANGLE and SIZE in the label definition for your annotation layer. You can use that as an alternative to using STYLEITEM AUTO.
I looked for this in the docs and could not find any ref to it, so it's possible that this feature was never properly documented.
