Many thanks to Bob, Phil, Mike and others for assistance in geting e00 files 
to work.  In retrospect it's clear that the coordinates option on the import 
screen is critical (and easy to bypass if you don't think you need to set 
the coordinate information in the first place).  It took a little bit of 
work to get the UTM settings from the file creator,  but all is right with 
the world now.
