For State, Local and Tribal Organization Employees: $500 (includes software) Course Description: This course will emphasize instruction in how to use GIS in the real world of public health. The emphasis is on "how to think with maps" and how a public health practitioner can think geographically and spatially. We will show you how to do some statistical modeling, simple statistical descriptions of spatial data as well as make pretty maps. With software, a public health practitioner with no specialized training can create geographic analysis and effective maps. Students are strongly encouraged to have had one or more courses in statistics and epidemiology as well experience using a statistical software package such as SAS, SPLUS, SPSS, SYSTAT, Stata, or EpiInfo. EPIDEMIOLOGY-TOOLS OF THE TRADE Faculty: Ronald Di Giacomo, VMD, MPH; James Gale, MD, MS; Mark Oberle, MD, MPH Time of Course: Mon-Fri, 8:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Cost: $200 Course Description: This course will focus on several areas in public health practice where an understanding of epidemiologic methods is critical in the collection, analysis and interpretation of data on health and disease. These areas, covered in individual discussion sessions, will include surveillance, surveys, screening and outbreak investigations. Each area will be examined in the context of a case study in order to provide exposure to situations that would actually be encountered. To enhance relevance, participants are encouraged to submit materials from their work experience that could be used in conjunction with the case studies. Topic areas covered will include: leading change in organizations; media communication skills; health policy planning and development; community environmental health assessment; and bioterrorism. PUBLIC HEALTH INFORMATICS Faculty: Patrick O'Carroll, MD, MPH; Bryant T. Karras, MD; and Steve Rauch, MLS Time of Course: Mon-Fri, 1:30 p.m.-5 p.m. Cost: $200 Course Description: Informatics is a set of principles and practices that can help public health professionals harness computers, the Web, and other information technologies to their work. This course provides a basic introduction to this new and growing field. Participants will receive training in informatics principles and concepts, and become familiar with the appropriate use, deployment, and management of key technologies for communications, security, data access and information management. The goal of the course is not to turn participants into computer scientists or programmers; rather, it is to help them become more effective managers and users of public health-relevant information technology. HEALTH PROGRAM PLANNING AND EVALUATION Faculty: Clarence Spigner, DrPH Time of Course: Mon-Fri, 1:30 p.m.-5 p.m. Cost: $200 Course Description: This five-day course is designed as an overview for those interested in planning and evaluation methods for health services programs. When things don't go according to plan, it is often because there never was a plan. The same can be said about how to assess a program's effectiveness. Topics to be covered in this course include evaluation designs, measurement and data collection issues, data analysis and the significance of evaluation results. PUBLIC HEALTH MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP Faculty: Jeremy Sappington, MSPH Time of Course: Mon-Fri, 1:30 p.m.-5 p.m. Cost: $50 per single session or $200 for all five days Course Description: This four part seminar is an opportunity to explore ways to improve the most basic management skills. The four basic skill sets that are covered are: 1. Intraorganizational Communications, 2. Organizing and Managing Effective Meetings, 3. Managing Professional Work Teams and 4. Managing Negotiations for Durable Agreements. Participants may register for any number of seminars. For those who register for all four there will be a summary discussion session on the fifth day designed to integrate learnings from all seminars.
