Maptitude for the Web makes it very simple to create applications for
fleet tracking.
I jsut finished a proposal for such an implementation. I am not
in a position to provide comments based on hands on
experience, until the project is approved and running. However we
have designed a map server based in MTW that retrieves positional
and telemetry information from an SQL server database, and creates maps
on demand.
Each mobile is equipped with a laptop , a GPS and a GMS cell
phone.
The areas where we need to track the fleet are not covered by
a Wi Fi service, so we are proposing to use MSM (short text
messages sent from a cell phone) fropm the mobiles to the server every
xxx minutes, with positioanal and telemetry infomration.
that information is stored in SQL server and retreived by Maptitude to
generate maps when needed. Operatosr access an ASP.NET page with
all the web controls needed for navigating the map and perfomring
queries. If the mobiels require a map, isntead of sending an
image we send a series of MSM (Since the mobiles are not connected to
the internet ) with enough information to generate a map on an
onboard laptop running Maptitude (or some other GIS or map
viewer).
For now, we will be using my own routing and drive time algortihms,
written in DK, to be able to dispatch mobiles as needed. In the future,
we will switch toi C# versions of the algorithms.
I can tell you that writing the specs for the map server and the
mobile clients was a snap. The hard part was to find the type of
communications technology and GPS/ telemetry devices taht would be
suitable to our area.
