Hi Dick! Well... yes. Image files are cosmetic from the point of view of raster analysis. But a cosmetic image layer such as a georeferenced satellite image or aerial photograph could add a lot of "visual" or "real world" information as a raster background of a mainly vector environment as Maptitude is. In the case you mentioned I see two alternatives: 1) Open the raster image or map with Mapt, then assuming the image or map is georeferenced (if not please do so), just digitize points, lines or areas according to your interest and logic of the source. Then make your analysis in Mapt. I.E. You can digitize points in different colored areas adding a Field to your geographic file where you type in a number (real or integer) that represents the intensity of the phenomenon you pretend to map. Later on you can make a surface map with Isolines (where Iso-whatever is based on your variable, like quantity of mosquito larvae collected, for instance). The resulting map will make sense in Mapt and anyway you will have the original raster source as background. 2) You can take your map into any vectorization system (like R2V or CAD Overlay) and create any vector you want there, later on export to a compatible format, such as DXF or one of the other systems and import into Maptitude to use at will. 3) As you mentioned, you can do your calculations in any raster GIS package, there are several pretty good and not expensive, as IDRISI or ILWIS (www.itc.nl), then convert your results into a compatible vector format and import into Maptitude.
Good luck! Reinaldo ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Richard Hoskins wrote: > As far as I know image files in Mapt are just cosmetic.
