Caliper does give you the option to pick the units for the grid spacing; instead of using the default of Long/Lat Degrees select a different coordinate system by toggling the radio button below the one labeled "Use Long/Lat Coord".  Then select a new coordinate system, UTM or State Plane seem to work best, and from there you can pick meters, feet, miles, etc.. For the most control over the grid placement, select "Enter the orgin, grid spacing and number of cells" under Method.

Thanks for the tip. I use y degrees for x miles to the map center
(second option). But it would help if Caliper had a miles apart
option. Regards,
