To successfully join two dataviews, the common field (e.g. zipcode)
must have the same format in both views. If the zip code is defined as
an integer or real value in one view and a character value in the
other, the system won't see it or allow you to join with that field.
The recommended format for zip code is character (because sometimes
9-digit zipcodes have a hyphen (-) character separating the 5 + 4
digits). Just select modify table and redefine the data type and then
try the join again...it should work once the formats are the same.

I'm trying to link a map I've created with two layers (state
boundaries and a hidden zip-code) to some data. My data has a Local
number, the number of members in the local, and the zip code. I want to
link the zip code in the data to the zip code layer of the map, but
maptitude only recognizes the Local and Member fields when I pick the
table.
How can I get maptitude to recognize this field? I've tried to
open it in dataview, as a text file, and it just keeps reading two
fields instead of all of them.

It's a problem with Maptitude -- they don't show up on the screen (in
the layout window), either. My workaround is to make a subset of the
streets (on a new layer) that *need* to have labels. It's a real
PITA.
