Yes. Illustrator reads and writes PDF. It would be really nice if
Maptitude were able to write PDF (natively), preserving the map
layers as Illustrator layers, and adding one more layer for auto
labels.

It would also be nice if Maptitude could write a map window to an
Acrobat PDFWriter (5.0) page larger than 27 inches square.

Alternately, it would be nice if Maptitude could send the shields
font properly to Acrobat Distiller (5.0).

I'm currently working on a project that will require 54" x 36" maps
(about 100cm in the short dimension). So far it's not working well.
Maptitude can print that size to the printer (HP 750) just fine. The
problem is lack of a preview mode. Well, that combined with a print
time of over an hour. Just as an example: I might have two symbols on
the map which represent (perhaps) bus stops. I want the symbols to be
on opposite sides of the street, with the symbols *almost* touching
the street. Unfortunately, the symbols are sized in points; as one
zooms in on the map, the symbols remain their fixed point size. So I
can zoom in and move them about, but there is no telling how they
will relate to one another on the printed page. Then I might decide I
want to move them 1/4" closer to the corner of the block. Again, it's
easy to zoom in on the symbols and move them, but no way to tell how
far they have moved on the printed page.

Here's another: The auto labels depicted on the screen bear no
relation to those in the print. That's a problem if I plan on placing
text so that it won't overlap. I know I can convert the highway
shields to manual labels, but then when I print I get two of each
because the labels are fixed by the "Feature Display" feature. I can
go in and remove all the shields using "Feature Display" but that
impacts all of my maps, not just the one I'm working on.

When working at 8.5 x 11 (letter size paper), it's possible to get a
pretty good idea of how things will look by looking at the layout
window. It just doesn't work for large paper sizes. Actually, at
letter size, I just print things out, because printing is pretty
fast.
