I have a TIF I got from Peru's mapping agency, a scan of a paper map. They are rather large.  When I try to read this file into Maptitude it allows me to specify a coordinate system, South and Central America, Peru central zone.

When I choose OK Maptitude immediately dies, (memory error). Sometimes it works but then if I try to zoom in it crashes.

If I read the same TIF into IrfanView (light graphics editor/viewer) it is read in  with no problem.  If I export it out as a TIF and check that there is no compression (a compession dialog box appears which appears to think is is LZF compression. It may be)

Then I can read in the file into Maptitude. The file is about 400m, but Maptitude will take it. I tried the same procedure of exporting to EMF and then reading it in and exporting as a TIF. This works too.  However if I choose a coordinate system and try to register it, when I press the register button the image disappears. (I have the signs, etc right on the reference longs/lat.  ??

Anyone have ideas about is happening?

1. why does the original TIF (possibly in LZW compressed format) killing Mpatitude?

2. Why when I choose REGISTER the image disappears, but the long/lat that appear under the pointer tool are reasonable/

Any ideas?
