Those areas are non-topological (i.e., polygons) so the common edges could not be dropped. (I sent Louis in a separate e-mail a PNG image of a Merge by Value of the July 2000 ZIP Code boundaries for the same ZIP Codes, using the file that comes with Maptitude that is topological, i.e., areas bounded by edges.)
