I posted a solution to this very problem just a few months ago. See the
discussion of "Selection Measure.rsc" in message #4094
(http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/Maptitude/message/4094). The code is pretty
heavily documented, so you should be able to adapt it to your needs (if it
doesn't already do what you want)!
