Hi David,
Why don't you use selections show/hide features instead? There is no
need to mutilate (by clipping) a geographic database if what you need is
just hiding a bunch of features. You can always save your map or
workspace for future jobs, and modify it according to your needs. It
takes some time to prepare the selections if you have many layers on
your map, but at the end my experience is that it worth the trouble.
