Have you looked into the "combine selection" function? 

That tool's title is a bit of a misnomer, because it's a lot more powerful than 
the name implies. 

It lets you do just about anything you could describe with a Venn diagram: 
items in both sets; items in either set (but not both); items in a specific set 
(but not the other); items in neither set... you get the picture.
