Rudy,

The one thing Stewart didn't mention is a nice undocumented hack:  you can use 
Edit-->Fill->Formula to fill a column with the results of any function that 
returns a numeric or string datatype. Just make sure that your field settings 
match the datatype to be returned. 

I haven't done this recently (not since version 4.x), but I'll wager it's still 
possible!
