10.8+ won't start without a ib_logfile0. This is what not starting looks like.
Start it with at 10.7 version which will recreate ib_logfile0, and if
you're lucky, you maybe won't have corrupted data because of this.
Then try 10.8+.

If you see other sites saying delete ib_logfile0, please share your
experience with them

OK thanks for your feedback.
The coming two weeks I'll be very busy with other projects, so it will
take a time before I can get into this again.
AFAICS from running the 10.6 version, the data is still good, and I've
made a copy of the data-dir (besides of course normal back-ups).
It seems to me this version stuff is too sensitive: why won't 10.8 open
a database which is running fine in 10.6? Should be some backwards
compatibility, shouldn't it?
Any case, I get a lot of help here, so thanks for that!
