Hi Fellow Alumni,
August 15 Friday was the Feast of Assumption. As President of the
Marist School Alumni Association, I was invited to join the activities
for the day. We started with a mass to honor the Assumption of
Mama Mary. Afterward, the priest was asked to bless two new sports
facilities. First was the tennis courts with the rubberized polymer
surface. It is now located right beside the swimming. For those of
you old enough to remember that softball field near the mango tree, it
is somewhere in rightfield. Night games are possible with the lighted
court. And it's not your typical lights where you lose the ball in
flight.
But on to the next facility blessed as this is what prompted me to
write this email. Remember that grade school basketball court? You
know the only FIBA-sized court in school where you had six teams, even
more, simultaneously playing a game during recess and lunch breaks. On
the side, you had about hundreds playing sipa, tag, agawan base, etc.
Where Mrs. Mallonga would blow that bull horn to announce the assembly
for the morning talk. That same court where Ryan Bernardo of the PBA
played; where Freddie Hubalde is now a coach. You know they just had
first communion because the floor was so slippery from the wax
drippings.
My best memory? Practicing the crucial that lay-up where you had to
stop dead in your tracks otherwise you end up kissing the wall,
literally. You'll know if your playing against a Maristian when he
goes for a lay-up, fading away from the basket. Pare, lay-up na fade
away. Malupit.
Well, they set back the line by a good 4-5 meters. AND, we now have a
collapsible ring AND a collapsible board and post WORTH P 450,000, yes
read them Peso Four Hundred Fifty Thousand. I attempted a dunk just to
test the unit but I fell four feet short of the goal. AND it does not
end there. They installed a taraflex like flooring, only thicker and
more rigid. By the way, remember the boards that cut across the
court. The low ones perfect for those in grade one-three, or those
below five feet. They also replaced that with a fiberglass board.
I took pictures (visit the [EMAIL PROTECTED]). You'll have
to bear with the quality as I only used a phone. I asked Architect
Dela Paz '72 to send me better pictures.
So, if only to see the new court, BE WITH US FOR THE GENERAL/GRAND
HOMECOMING ON SEPTEMBER 6, 2008 (SATURDAY). Mass will be celebrated at
4pm. This year's host is batch '83 and the twist is the celebration
will be taped and will be shown in Jojo Alejar's ('83) show in QTV. I
talked to Eric Tabafunda '83, chair of homecoming organizing
committee. They are bringing in two generator sets for the show. That
only means the best light and sound system.
Please pass this on to your batchmates.
