I don't really have much opinion on this discussion. It seems to me that Gruber is happy with what Markdown does and doesn't see a need for active work on the project. Certainly that torch has been taken up by the many other implementations. His alleged response regarding GitHub Flavored Markdown seems to indicate that he's content with this development path.
