I agree that it would be nice to have such support for 3.0. I suspect that having it in place is beyond the capacities of the shell team though. Also extension support isn't just a question of having the necessary capacities in GNOME Shell itself. We need distribution and installation mechanisms in place. (I'm sure Owen could give you a better account of this than I could.) > This is important for two reasons, I think; > 1) It is a rather uncontroversial idea that having an extension system > is a good way to excite developers and power users (e.g. firefox/chrome > extensions, the unity places api, etc) > 2) It would look like a genuine gesture meant at addressing some of the > power user uncertainty towards g-s. I know there are some concerns about customisation and GNOME 3. A few points here: * Some of us who are involved in marketing have already been pushing for the GNOME tweak tool. We're aware that it needs to become a reality. Would you be interested in working on this? Seriously - we'd love your help. * We need to send out a clear statement about the plan for customisation in GNOME 3 (we do have a strong story here, thankfully). This is something that I'm currently working on, and I'm hoping to be able to blog about it out soon.
