sure, if there's a less invasive, less annoying way of getting that info, I would be interested - but the old registration dialog was simply a huge, royal PITA, and pretty much everyone I know clicked it away immediately (which totally defeats its purpose). For linux, something like the mentioned popularity contest is much better (and benefits all floss projects) - for Win32/Mac, I would guess one could get much better data from (opt-in) update notifications.
