Location

I have had a couple of people ask me if it would be OK to throw a house party as a LO Release Party celebration. I think the response that I got on this question was that a donated space, like in a bar or university/college room etc. would be preferred.

IMO if you are unable to host in such a public location, I would think that a house party/celebration with LO users/dev/corporate would be just as appropriate. Remember to take photos along with permissions to post photos on our site! (As a rule, getting permissions from people who appear in photos that are going to be posted on a site is strongly suggested.)

For myself, as an example, I will try to have a public party, most probably in a tavern setting where food is served, if I can. Otherwise, I am also planning a house party with some LO users/clients/education as I am just getting over a couple of major back surgeries and walking is still a work-in-progress. I am still prone to tripping and mis-calculating my steps. So the house party may be the best option for myself.

Just make it personal and comfortable. Have fun!

When should I hold the party?

That, IMO, is up to you.

Some people will find that holding a party on the actual release day is essential. This, I would consider essential for the TDF foundation members and perhaps the devs. Great for marketing and publicity. Not only that, but it will close a very short and condensed effort to a great achievement. For which we are already applauding you for all of your work. Thank you! You are all amazing individuals!

Others, like myself, will hold it perhaps a week or two after the release, as most of the people, who I hope to invite, will want to download and use the suite first. In all fairness, we should allow them the time to download and try out the suite before asking them to celebrate the release of the suite. Most of my OOo users are waiting for the final LO release as they use their OOo for production work. They can't afford to use a beta version of anything.
