I never liked Skype. It's proprietary, and while it can get through most firewalls with basic features, calling behind firewalls can be a real pain. I had to open a dozen ports to make it work at all, and sometimes, the sound quality isn't what it should be.
I am much in favor of using a real phone or SIP client, but I see there are countries where Skype is the only cheap solution.
