Hey Matt, I think that the default excerpts is set at the first 55 words, and I don't think that we can raise it (check the index.php file in the editor under the appearance tab). Although we are able to make our own excerpts (short summaries) when writting a post, and make it as lengthy as we want it. That way the excerpts can be really informative. But not all wp themes support that feature (write your own excerpt)
