Hi Ryan, I think it would be better if the default role for new people is "Contributor" instead of "Author". Although contributors by default can't upload media, with the User Roles plugin we can give them the privilege of uploading media, without being authors. Because authors can publish new posts, and that could be potentially dangerous.
