Here is a way anyone can tell whether someone is subscribed to the list. It only requires that your mail client has a way to see the full headers for an email. In GMail, for example, I do this by picking "show original" from the drop down menu on the upper right of an email. If the headers include a line like this: Delivered-To: moderator for [email protected] That means the message was held for moderation, which means the user was not subscribed to the list. Whenever I see a new name on the mailing list I check that header. If the user is not subscribed I am sure to cc the user on my response and remind them that they need to subscribe.
