Alright - using Ubuntu and mkisofs with the following parameters:

mkisofs -o LibreOffice-NA-CommDVD-3.3.1-1.iso -l -relaxed-filenames
-allow-lowercase -no-iso-translate -publisher LibreOffice-NA-Marketing
-V LibreOffic-NA-Community-DVD NA-Community-DVD/*

Under linux and Vista now the image, mounted on a DVD drive in a VM, is
working as expected.

I have an XP box that I need to actually burn a physical DVD to test on
still.

so - I can feel sane again for the moment..

HTH,
