National Review Magazine uncovers Giuliani's ties to libertarian movement: He's
surrounded by Milton Friedmanites
There's a big article about to hit in National Review Magazine, about Rudy
Giuliani's "libertarian brain trust." It goes into detail about who is
surrounding Giuliani from the policy world, and who is likely to be in his
Cabinet. Surprise, surpise, they're mostly all movement libertarians. They
come from the Hoover Institute, Inst. for Justice, Pacific Research Inst. and
Manhattan Inst. "Milton Friedmanite" libertarians like Martin Anderson, Bill
Simon, Clinton Bolick and Sally Pipes. Here's a couple advance snippet from
the article:
For the 56-year-old Simon, it might mean following in the footsteps of his
father, William E. Simon, who was secretary of the treasury under Presidents
Nixon and Ford. The senior Simon was known not only for his horn-rimmed glasses
but also for a hard-charging conservatism that blended his famously short
temper with a deep commitment to free-market principles.
Before long, Simon arranged for Giuliani to meet with Hoover Institution
scholars at the Pacific Union Club in San Francisco on August 18, 2006.
Attendees included Hoover director John Raisian, economics guru Michael Boskin,
and the late Milton Friedman. Everyone thought Giuliani was smart and quick,
says Martin Anderson, who was there. He signed on with the campaign, as did
several other Hooverites, including Boskin, who is now its chief economics
adviser.
Since the Iraq briefings, Giuliani has attended sessions on subjects ranging
from energy to taxes. Along the way, he has assembled a crew of conservative
and libertarian advisers: Clint Bolick on education, Louis Freeh on homeland
security, Charles Hill on foreign policy, Ted Olson on judges, and Sally Pipes
on health care. Were like a mini-think tank, says Simon.
Comment: Let's see now. Martin Anderson, Bill Simon, Sally Pipes, Clint
Bolick. Sounds like a regular libetarian think tank fiesta. Oh, and need we
remind these Rudy doubters, that within the last two days, libertarian guru
Grover Norquist heartily backed Giuliani's tax proposals, and the Club for
Growth chimed in with warm praise for Giuliani's position in favor of school
choice. And signs that Cato itself have been warming to the Giuliani campaign,
as well.
Wonder what the Ron Paul partisans, and the Rudy doubters among the partisan
Libertarian Party set, have to say now?
