DC Reasonoids: Happy Hour, Friday, January 11, 6.30PM Nick Gillespie | January 9, 2008, 2:26pm On Friday, January 11, starting at 6.30PM at The Big Hunt, the staff of reason is hosting a happy hour featuring drink and food specials. Things we'll be celebrating: * The publication of our February issue, featuring Senior Editor Brian Doherty's cover story on "the Ron Paul Revolution," an interview with MTV's Kurt Loder on Internet freedom, Steve Earle's overly didactic ditties, the curse of legacy preferences in college admissions, the war on fornication, and much, much more. * The full-time presence in the DC of Matt Welch, who will take over the print edition of reason with the April 2008 issue as Nick Gillespie takes over the reason..com and reason.tv sites. * Senior Editor Kerry Howley's recent cover story about Mike Huckabee in Politics (formerly Campaigns & Elections) and her recent op-ed on Hillary Clinton in The New York Times. * The presence of very special guest star Michael Shermer, editor of The Skeptic, columnist for Scientific American, and author of the brand-new book, The Mind of the Market: Compassionate Apes, Competitive Humans, and Other Tales from Evolutionary Economics. So come on out on Friday and see if The Washington Post's recent description of reason's happy hours as "every Libertarian-as-Bacchus fantasy you've entertained" is more truthful than Janet Cooke's Pulitzer Prize-winning expose of "Jimmy's World." reason happy hour Friday, January 11 The Big Hunt 1345 Connecticut Avenue NW Washington, DC 6.30PM-whenever the fun stops
----- Original Message ---- From: Brian Holtz <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [email protected] Sent: Saturday, December 29, 2007 2:51:25 AM Subject: [marketliberal] [Libertarian Intelligence] Walter Block: Ron Paul Is Libertarian Litmus Test Radical libertarian economist Walter Block of Loyola University yesterday posted an open letter to libertarians: In my view, the "Ron Paul question" constitutes a litmus test for libertarians. Simply put, the "Ron Paul question" consists of determining whether or not a person supports Dr. Paul. If so, as I see matters, he passes this test and can be constituted a libertarian; if not, his credentials are to that extent suspect. So, who is failing this exam? [...] [I]mmigration and abortion are highly unsettled issues in our community. I regard Murray Rothbard, Hans Hermann Hoppe and Stephan Kinsella as three of the most gifted libertarian theoreticians that have ever graced our movement. All three disagree with me and Paul’s critics on these two matters. As I stated here, when expert libertarian philosophers disagree with each other, it is a bit much to declare either side anti- or non-libertarian. It is therefore highly improper to castigate Dr. Paul for taking a position on immigration and abortion incompatible with libertarianism, no matter how much, nor how fervently, we disagree with Paul, Hoppe, Rothbard and Kinsella on these two issues, as I do. [...] Block goes on to wave away the objection by radical libertarian philosopher Roderick Long that Paul's alleged deviations on immigration and abortion and gay rights are comparable to, say, Georgetown's libertarian law professor Randy Barnett's alleged deviation in favor of libervention in Iraq. Block cites his own takedown of Barnett's defense of libervention in Iraq, but Barnett's argument (that nation-building in Iraq is "self-defense against Islamic jihadists") is an embarrassment to this liberventionist. Stronger arguments are available from me and from Starchild. -- Posted By Brian Holtz to Libertarian Intelligence at 12/28/2007 11:18:00 PM ____________________________________________________________________________________ Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo!
