New publication: Gaydos, J.K., S. Raverty, R.W. Baird and R.W. Osborne. 2005. Suspected surplus killing of harbor seal pups (Phoca vitulina) by killer whales (Orcinus orca). Northwestern Naturalist 86:150-154.
No abstract is available. This note describes necropsy results on five harbor seal pups from San Juan County, Washington USA, with gross lesions indicating predation without consumption. Based on wound measurements, wounds were consistent with the mandibular span and dentition of killer whales. The possible killer whale populations involved in the killings and potential causes are discussed.
