The Dolphin Research Institute (DRI) is a non-profit organisation that has been conducting research since 1993 into the resident coastal population of bottlenose dolphins in Port Phillip, Victoria, Australia.  The DRI is seeking a suitably qualified person to take on the role of Research Director.  The position is a maternity leave position for 12 months, at which point it will be reviewed.  The successful candidate would be available to start in early April 2006.

 

Responsibilities:  The Research Director is responsible for the overall implementation of the DRI’s research program and reports to the Research Committee and Board of Management.  Among other duties, the position involves managing both the fieldwork program and research administration, which involves all aspects of design, planning and analysis.  The Research Director is also responsible for all research staff, students and volunteers. 

Qualifications and skills:  Applicants must at least have a Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree with majors in zoology, ecology, or marine subjects.  The position also requires: boat handling; cetacean research experience including population studies (photo-identification) and behavioural research (experience with genetic research would be a plus); management/supervisory experience and ability; sound analytical skills; high level oral and written communication skills.
