My name is Mark Davison and I am studying the effectiveness of the IUCN Red Book threat clasification system. I would be very interested in any MARMAM members comments they may have in relation to the IUCN system.
My PhD studies are focussing on developing a more appropriate threat classification system for island nations such as New Zealand and other Pacific island nations. I feel that the IUCN is more applicable for classifying continental (Africa, USA, Canada etc) threatened species.
In my opinnion threat classification systems in general have a bias towards "terrestrial vertebrates". Also, threatened marine species, especially marine fish and invertebrates are poorly studied and very few are actively managed by species recovery plans.
I look forward to your comments
Regards,
Mark
