Dear colleagues

We have received info on bottlenose dolphin with net and rope entangled around its tail. After finding the animal we saw a big piece of rope and net buried within the caudal part of the animal’s body at the base of the tail. Animal was visibly exhausted from dragging this net probably additionally weighted with led weights on the rope.

We tried to approach the animal with boat and by snorkeling and scuba diving, but the animal was agitated and did not allow us to approach so after several hours of unsuccessful work we had to give up as sun was setting.

We are looking for advice on how the animal could be captured (currently we are looking for a purse seiner with small net that could set the net around the animal) and experiences/opinions for further potential rehabilitation. I must stress that we have no facilities for dolphin husbandry and are planning to immediately release the animal if that will be possible, but any serious reasons not to do it will be considered.

Should you feel appropriate, please reply to my private email [email protected] not to burden the list. Pictures of the dolphin can be seen on http://www.plavi-svijet.org/hr/znanost/lamjana/

Thank you for your fast replies,

Drasko Holcer
