Dear all,

AIMM - Marine Environment Research Association is seeking applications as research assistant to help with fieldwork related with the *study on cetaceans* we undertake in the South of Portugal (Algarve). This project intends to continue the work AIMM has been developing in collaboration with several dolphin watching companies present in the area. *Fieldwork will take place from 31 of July to 30 of October 2011*. All participants will be trained by AIMM researchers.

Participants interested will join the team for 7 days period but preference will be given to applicants able to stay for longer periods. Participation includes boat surveys on the research vessel and on opportunistic platforms (dolphin watching boats). Data collection will include species behaviour/group size, photo-identification, lectures, training and how to operate as researcher in dolphin watching trips. You will be responsible for your own transportation to and from the main AIMM station. We will provide accommodation although there is a fee for basic maintenance of the station (300€ per week). Transport will be provided to the harbour most of the time. Food will be at your own expenses except breakfast, but communal shopping will keep the expenses low. Apart from research activities, participants will share everyday duties and chores with the team members.


Successful applicants will:

- have a mature attitude towards marine mammal research

- be autonomous and quickly operational

- be able to live and work constructively with others in a team

- speak fluently Portuguese and/or English/Spanish

Preference will be given to those who:

- have previous experience in photo-identification

- have previous experience on research boats

- have previous experience working from dolphin/whale watching platforms

- have previous relevant marine mammal field experience

- have professional cameras that can be used for photo-ID


_No previous experience is required. Anyone above the age of 16 can participate, regardless of nationality or field of expertise._

Applications will be accepted during all period although, early application is recommended as applications will be examined in order of reception.
